The use of the oxymoron, ‘alone together,’ spiked as people sought to overcome pandemic isolation. Restaurants provided physical distance for diners. Technology brought us into each other’s living rooms from the comfort of our own homes.
The concept pre-dates the recent public
health crisis. When social media emerged and escalated, counselors cautioned about the illusion of connection, citing risks associated with 'alone together.' Other writers waxed cozily about watching movies as a positive experience of being alone together.
Lent has embodied this notion for centuries. With prayerful contemplation, we reflect on our individual humanness, frailty, and sin as we journey together with Christians around the globe toward the promise of resurrection.
The Congregational Way illustrates ‘alone together.’ NACCC member churches cherish their uniqueness while choosing fellowship with other congregations. Thank you for uplifting ‘alone together’ as a blessing!
